How to use this calculator

  1. Enter original size in MB.
  2. Enter compressed size in MB.
  3. Select Calculate and keep the output unit with the answer.

Before you use the answer

Write down whether a size uses decimal or binary prefixes and whether a rate counts bits or bytes. Compare the same system boundary on both sides of a performance calculation. Measured throughput is usually a more useful planning input than the maximum number on a product label.

Negative savings mean the output grew, which is possible with overhead or incompressible input.

Why might a result be approximate?

Measurement uncertainty, ideal-model assumptions and floating-point rounding can all matter. Displaying more digits does not improve the original measurement.
